Mata Amritanandamayi Explains the Shiva Linga
(The following is a Q&A from Her program on Amrita T.V.)
Devotee Q: What are the actual facts about the worship of Shiva Linga?
Amma A: God is formless and attribute-less but at the same time It has a form and has attributes. Hence we accept and worship a form which represents both the formless and the form that is the Shiva Linga. Not only that but scientists today claim that the universe is shaped like an egg. An egg is also called 'andam' in sanskrit. In fact, for thousands of years the word used to describe the universe in India was 'brahmaandam'. The Shiva Linga is a small scale representation of this egg shaped universe. When we worship the Shiva Linga we are actually seeing the entire universe as God-consciousness and worshipping it. Millions of people have used this holy symbol to attain liberation. Amma does not understand what people stand to gain by ridiculing this sacred symbol and giving it non-existent meanings. All it can do is create anger and hatred. To enjoy the bliss of the Self the eggshell of our ego has to crack open. Worshipping the egg-shaped Shiva Linga will help us awaken that awareness.
